Ableton Live expert and catalyst for hire

Tuition

I’m an experienced lecturer, course developer, course leader and mentor and in addition to my regular teaching positions at BIMM, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and ICMP I can provide bespoke modular one-to-one tuition – either in person in London, online via Zoom or remotely at your studio/workplace/home.

For audio, I am able to teach all aspects of music production, sound design or live performance (including audio-visual work) and I focus on using the Ableton Live software for my tuition. If you are interested in live video/VJing I also teach Resolume Avenue.

I have devised a series of modules covering all aspects of using these apps, from the very basics through to advanced setups. This modular approach gives you great flexibility to choose exactly what and how you learn.

I work with both Mac and PC platforms and provide a friendly yet professional service. I’m based in north-east London, have public liability insurance and am CRB checked. I have been teaching since 2012 and hold a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

In this video tutorial I take a fairly advanced look at the powerful Drum Rack instrument native to Ableton Live:

For many years I ran the London Ableton User Group and this is excerpt from an online session aimed at people perhaps new to working with Ableton Live:

Here is an example of the course development work I’ve done – developing a workshop directly for Ableton for other people to run:

Production and Remixing

I’ve been producing music under various monikers since the late 1990s that explore my tastes and passions for electronic music in different ways.

My work covers everything from downtempo industrial soundscapes to bouncy electro and bass music and abstract techno to uptempo breakbeat madness.

Here is an example of electronica music production completed for a collaboration with a vocalist and harp player:

This is a more sound-design-driven and abstract example of experimental techno:

Skip through a condensed 30 minute showreel of my recent uptempo dancefloor-orientated productions:

I also enjoy twisting other people’s music into wild territories through remixing. Here are some examples of what I do:

For Smiley and the Underclass I turned an upbeat reggae track into a horror-core rockabilly drum & bass tune:

For German folk-punk violinist Geigerzaehler I transformed one of his songs into a glitchy lo-fi remix and made everything apart from the rhythm section from his violin recordings:

For the Scald ensemble I boiled down their 25 minute epic Plunge into a more compact and intense sonic assault:

Live shows

In the role of Playback Engineer or Show Designer I have created many custom audio-only or audio-visual setups using Ableton Live at the core but which can also bring in VJ/media-server software such as Resolume Avenue or VDMX.

This has been for my own stage-shows or other stage design, theatre or art installation commissions. I am used to working on a shoestring budget but am keen to embrace larger projects as well.

For the final touch I create a touch-screen control panel to run the whole show via the Lemur software, now available for the iPad. I have worked on solo shows, group/band projects and surround sound setups.

Please get in touch if you have a creative live show that you need my help to realise, need a show technician/operator or if you wish to bring me in as a consultant on an existing project – my head bristles with ideas that need to get out!

For the Crux audio-visual performance events I designed a bespoke 8 speaker immersive audio sound-system, using a capable audio interface with an ADAT I/O extension, a low-latency Ableton Live project, some Max for Live devices and a custom interface made in Lemur running on an iPad and additional gesture-based control with a LEAP Motion controller:

Video work

I also have a visual side to my work – initially as an artworker (creating layouts for print) then later as video technician, VJ and motion graphics artist.

I have also created audio-visual performances solo and with other artists and more recently – turning my hand to editing music videos and documentaries.
